March 2026 Apiary Update

This past month we were hit with a cold spell, much like the rest of the country. However, we are not built for 26 degree temperatures, which is what we had (unlike the 36 degrees as predicted). While we tried our best to protect all of our plantings, we had about a 10-20% loss. At this point we are allowing the warmer temperatures to promote some leaf growth to try to determine what is actually dead and what will come around.
We get asked frequently what the bees do during these cold temperatures - as long as the weather is around 50 degrees they are out flying and looking for pollen and nectar to bring back to the hive. Remember, bees are kept throughout the world, so in areas where they get that nasty cold white stuff (snow), they have to insulate the hives with hay or even actual insulation. Bees, left to their own devices, will typically keep the hive around 90 degrees to protect the brood (babies).
