November Apiary Update

Here is a photo of our apiary (bee yard).  We paint the hives with light-colored paint in order for the boxes to not overheat.  Down here in FL we use screened bottom boards - like having screens on your windows instead of a solid glass pane to help with ventilation. In the winter we slide in a solid panel to help the bees retain their heat in the hives - if they are spending all of their time trying to stay warm, they aren’t making honey!  You will also notice they are all facing the same way (south), and are spaced out.   This way we are able to move around them when we inspect them, without standing in front of their hives, disrupting their flight paths.
